In scenarios 1-5 you will perform in the role of reporter, while in scenario 6 you take on the role of the sub-editor.

Scenario 1 is suitable for those who have completed a basic introduction to news writing.

Scenarios 2 to 4 are suitable for those who have completed an introduction to news writing, understand newspaper rounds work, and have a basic knowledge of ethical and legal restrictions faced by journalists.

Scenarios 5 and 6 are more challenging and are suitable for those with further skills in journalism and able to deal with multiple tasks.

A matter of time

Make sure you have enough uninterrupted time to run a scenario! Once a scenario has begun there is no escape. We deliberately did not provde pause or exit options, as HOTcopy runs in realtime in a real newsroom and the deadline has to be met. In some of the more complex scenarios like Cleveland Street and Fatal Crash it is highly unlikely any student will complete the tasks in the allotted time – that is the point. It should be noted that there are no reminders about time because users should feel under constant pressure.
